Will the English lads live up to the expectations?

It is conventional cricket time again after a very successful twenty20 world cup which took the whole cricketing world by surprise. Lot has been said and written in last few weeks about the whole twenty20 saga and the impact it would have on test and 50 over cricket. It will be interesting to note whether this series would draw the same enthusiasm and interest from the cricketing public.

Also this series will be important in another count as this is the first series(along with Australia vs India matches) where ICC’s new ODI rules will be implemented. See the list of one-day rule changes here. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/7019874.stm

Also it is after a gap of two long years that picturesque Dambulla stadium finally holds an international cricket match which was denied by internal politics.

Looking at the two teams hosts are without their champion spinner Muralitharan and will surely miss him in spinner friendly Dambulla wicket although substitutes have been brought in. Batting line up looks solid but will depend a lot on veteran Sanath Jayasuriya providing them a good start.

Tourist’s preparation for this series has already been hit by a stomach bug which affected four of their players including their skipper Paul Collingwood. And his presence for the first match starting at Dambulla will only hang by a thread. In his absence it will be interesting to see how attacking Kevin Pieterson leads the side. Also they will miss the ashes hero Freddie Fintoff who was ruled out of the series due to an injury. But England still got lot of reserve strength in their young brigade and it is up to them to put their hands up. Two men to watch out for in England line up will be charismatic Monty Panesar and hard hitting Dimitri Mascarenhas who has a another connection with the hosts as his grandparents are from Sri Lanka.

England side also looks a more confident unit after their series win against India even though they fared badly in twenty20 world cup. A lot is expected from them by the fans back home and also by the large contingent of Barmy army supporters who are already here. So can they live up to all these expectations?
